NYCHSF is a statewide New York nonprofit that works to improve the health and well-being of New York’s students by advocating for healthy plant-based foods, including local and organic where possible, farm to school programs, school gardens, the elimination of unhealthy foods and education to create food- and health-literate students.
In order to accomplish its goals NYCHSF has worked with the New York City Office of School Food and work to influence their standard, alternative, and vegetarian menus. In 2014 the organization continued to teach their signature nutrition education program named Food UnEarthed. This is a curriculum that encourages critical thinking skills with a detective theme. The program consists of 45 minute lessons in a 30 week series that includes food tasting. In Ithaca the NYCHSF continued its Cool School Food program and introduced several new entrees including with extensive taste testing activities. In addition they continued to develop new educational resources under the Veggiecation program. Teaching kids healthy eating habit should be a part of every child’s education and NYCHSF intends to be reach as many young people as possible with their high impact and effective programs.
