History & Focus

The Axe-Houghton Foundation was funded in 1965 by the bequests of Emerson and Ruth Axe. The Foundation is operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes.

Its principal mission is to foster and encourage an appreciation of the English language, with major emphasis on the spoken language.

Priority is given to projects for the improvement of speech and its uses in the areas of theatre, education, poetry, debate, and the oral interpretation of literature.
