Joel Appelbaum Swims Across the Hudson River to Raise Funds for My Own Book Fund
August 3, 2008
On a beautiful, warm August Sunday morning, our own Joel Appelbaum, long time volunteer and Steering Committee member of My Own Book, joined a few hundred swimmers as they stroked their way from Newburgh to Beacon by way of the Hudson River.
Being in fantastic shape (as you can see from the picture), Joel emerged from the river as if he had just finished a short walk in the park.
It really was a wonderful day with over 200 swimmers making their way across the Hudson from Newburgh to Beacon, NY. Even Pete Seeger was there to add his considerable talents and presence to the funky festival that greeted the swimmers when they reached the Beacon shore.
As a result of Joel’s efforts, his sponsors (MOBF volunteers, friends, family and corporations) donated over $10,000 to MOBF. In addition, Burt and Sandi Freeman, our founder and his wife, have generously matched the donations bringing total funds raised from Joel’s audacious swim to over $20,000. That translates to almost 3,000 new books that will be in the homes of our MOBF kids this coming year.
