Our Funding

Happy third grade girl buying books at the bookstoreMy Own Book is a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation, with an annual budget for book purchases of approximately $200,000, financed by gifts and grants from individuals, foundations, and corporations. It is staffed wholly by volunteers.

The Freeman family provides major support for the program and is, in addition, committed to absorbing its modest overhead expenses. All donations from other sources are applied entirely to the children’s book purchases. Burt and Sandi Freeman have also generously established an endowment fund.

In recent years, My Own Book has received generous support from the following institutional funders, dedicated to the cause of child literacy and to enriching the lives of New York City’s most disadvantaged children: Barnes & Noble, Bloomberg LLP, BJ’s Charitable Foundation, City National Bank, Coalition of Staten Island Women’s Organizations, Helmsley Charitable Trust, Metzger Price Fund, Vincent Mulford Foundation, Neuberger Berman, Oxford Strategic Advisors, Richmond County Savings Foundation, The Peter J. Sharp Foundation, and the Laura C. Vogler Foundation.
