The Foundation was formed in 1957 as the Lillian and Stanley Posner Foundation in Washington, DC. Following the death of Stanley Posner in 1965, the first and second generation family trustees continued to operate the Foundation. Lillian Kahn Posner married Irving Wallace, who became a first generation trustee. In 1986, the foundation changed its name to become the Posner-Wallace Foundation. Currently, the Foundation board is comprised of second and third generation trustees.

The Foundation concentrates its efforts in cities where family trustees reside, as well as selected charities that operate throughout the United States, and internationally. In addition to conventional grants, the Foundation allocates approximately 20% of its endowment to “impact investment” loans.
